sockeye-salmon_715_600x450(With files from The Canadian Press) Warm water temperatures and low river levels in the Fraser are getting much of the blame for a salmon-fishing closure now in effect from the Alexandra Bridge in the canyon to the CPR bridge in Mission.
Fisheries and Oceans officials imposed the closure after determining that summer sockeye runs on the river are drastically lower than predicted.
Test fisheries suggest returns are off by 3.5-million fish.
Despite the latest closure, sport fishermen remain optimistic that openings will be allowed when pink and chum salmon runs reach the river in a few weeks. At this point you can still fish for trout, steelhead and sturgeon.
