flaggerBetween the summer construction season and ongoing work on our highways we’re going to see a lot of flaggers on the road, which means people need to once again practice caution.

Sarina Hanschke from the BC Construction Safety Alliance says although it’s a high risk job no matter where you are, flaggers face more danger on highways.

“When you drive on a highway you have some gaps in your judgement as you kind of coast along versus a city street where people are paying a lot more attention to what’s going on around them and looking at all the different traffic control devices.”

Hanschke says a person is also much more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a collision at highway speeds.

She says police have been conducting blitzes on speed and distracted driving, but says people need to want to get rid of bad driving habits rather than just be afraid of getting tickets.
