(By Simon Druker) We’re two months into the school year and that means for some, it’s time for parent-teacher interviews.

Today’s Parent Magazine Editor Sasha Emmons says the meeting’s aren’t usually long so, make sure you’re prepared.

“[The interviews are] kind of like [visiting] the doctor so you want to maximize the time, make sure that you have read the report card and that you have discussed it with your child. If you have a bunch of concerns, maybe both education and social, it makes sense to just create a quick list. You have gotten to the things that are most important for you.”

She suggests coming into meeting with an open mind. “Be honest, your teacher is there to help and has really unique insight into your child.
You may be raising an eight-year-old for the first time but she has a whole classroom of eight-year-olds and can really tell you what is normal for that age. Really listen to what he or she has to say and try your best not to be defensive.”

And remember if there’s a problem, you don’t have to wait until interview time to speak up; you can contact your kid’s teacher any time.
