election signs mapAbbotsford’s election sign bylaw received three readings at Monday’s council meeting, and will go to a final vote at a future meeting.

The bylaw applies to all levels of government, including the upcoming federal election, and restricts sign locations to private property and to specific municipal properties.

However candidates can only put one sign up per location, and the signs can’t restrict traffic sightlines.

During debate on the bylaw Councilor Sandy Blue said she’d love it if they could ban all election signs.

Mayor Henry Braun says such an official move would never survive a challenge, but says there is one way it could happen.

“For the next election if all the candidates got together, as they did in Whistler, and they all agreed that there would be no election signage we could actually do that.”

Another change is that candidates would also be able to start putting signs up 46 days before election day, rather than the current 30 day limit.
